Nikkah Ceremony Checklist: Everything You Need to Prepare Before the Big Day

Last updated: August 2026 | Written by the Qalam Nigar Team

A Nikkah ceremony is one of the most important moments in a couple’s life, and the preparation that goes into it deserves just as much thought as the wedding itself. This checklist covers every key item and detail you need to have sorted before the day arrives, from the legal documents down to the pen you will use to sign your name.

What Exactly Happens at a Nikkah Ceremony?

Before getting into the checklist, it helps to understand what the Nikkah ceremony actually involves. The Nikkah is the Islamic marriage contract, performed in the presence of a Nikah registrar (usually a Qazi), the bride and groom, a wali (guardian) for the bride, and at least two adult Muslim witnesses. The Qazi recites the Nikah Khutbah, the proposal and acceptance (Ijab-o-Qubool) take place, and both parties sign the Nikkah Nama.

That last step, the signing, is what most couples want to make memorable. If you are thinking about the pen you will use for that signature, our guide on what a Nikkah pen is covers the meaning and tradition behind it in full detail.

The Essential Nikkah Ceremony Checklist

1. The Nikkah Nama (Marriage Contract)

This is the single most important document of the entire ceremony. The Nikkah Nama is the official Islamic and legal marriage contract in Pakistan, registered under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961.

What you need to arrange:

  • Contact your local Union Council to obtain the official Nikkah Nama form in advance
  • Confirm that your Qazi is registered and authorized to conduct and register Nikkahs in your area
  • Read through all the clauses beforehand, including the mehr (dower) amount, which must be agreed upon and written into the contract

Do not leave the Nikkah Nama to the last minute. Some Union Councils require advance registration or appointment, especially in busy months.

2. CNIC Copies for Both Parties

Both the bride and groom need their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC) for the registration process. Bring originals and at least two photocopies each. The Qazi and registrar will typically require these.

If either party is under 18, additional documentation is required by law.

3. Two Adult Muslim Witnesses (Gawah)

The presence of at least two adult male Muslim witnesses, or one male and two female witnesses depending on the school of thought, is a religious requirement for the Nikkah to be valid. These witnesses must:

  • Be adult Muslims
  • Be of sound mind
  • Be present at the time of Ijab-o-Qubool
  • Sign the Nikkah Nama

Confirm with your witnesses days ahead of the ceremony, not on the morning of. Make sure they have their CNICs with them as well.

4. The Wali (Guardian) for the Bride

Under Hanafi jurisprudence, which is widely followed in Pakistan, the bride’s wali (typically her father or nearest male relative) should be present for the Nikkah. His consent and presence are important both religiously and for the official paperwork.

5. The Mehr (Dower) Agreement

The mehr is the mandatory gift or sum of money that the groom gives to the bride as part of the Nikkah agreement. It becomes the bride’s exclusive property. You need to agree on:

  • The amount or item (this can be cash, gold, property, or any agreed value)
  • Whether it is prompt (paid immediately) or deferred (to be paid at a later date or upon divorce)
  • The correct entry in the Nikkah Nama

Settle the mehr agreement with your families before the ceremony date so there is no confusion at the time of signing.

6. A Dedicated Nikkah Pen

This one is easy to overlook because most people assume any pen will do. But the signing of your Nikkah Nama is a moment you will remember for the rest of your life. Having a pen that was made specifically for this occasion just makes it feel more complete.

A Nikkah pen is a custom, often decorative signature pen that couples use for the signing ceremony. Many couples keep it afterward as a keepsake from their wedding day. You can read more about the tradition in our post on what a Nikkah pen is and why couples choose one.

At Qalam Nigar, you can shop Nikkah pens in four different styles to match your wedding theme:

  • Handmade Nikkah Pens: Fully hand-crafted signature pens, our most popular collection.
  • Dip Nikkah Pens: Vintage quill-style pens with feather and antique detailing, perfect for a classic or old-world theme.
  • Metal Nikkah Pens: Chrome, gold, and rose gold finishes with gem or dried-flower accents, great for a modern and premium look.
  • Jute Nikkah Pens: Rustic jute-rope pens with heart and floral designs, ideal for outdoor or boho-themed Nikkahs.

Every pen can be personalized with a name, a date, or the words “Qabool Hai.” If you are not sure which style suits your ceremony, our Nikkah pen style comparison walks through all four options side by side.

One important note: because each pen is handcrafted to order, plan ahead. Order at least 7 to 10 days before your Nikkah date to account for the crafting and delivery time. If you are in Lahore or need it sooner, express delivery within 24 to 36 hours is available.

7. The Nikkah Tray or Signing Setup (Optional but Recommended)

Many families now set up a small, decorated tray or table for the signing moment, especially if there is a photographer present. A typical setup includes:

  • The Nikkah Nama folder or clipboard
  • A decorative Nikkah pen holder or velvet box
  • Fresh flowers or rose petals
  • A small frame or digital display showing the couple’s names

This is entirely optional but has become a popular detail for wedding photos and videos.

8. Venue and Timing Confirmation

Even a simple home Nikkah needs some logistics sorted in advance:

  • Confirm the date and time with your Qazi at least a week ahead.
  • Make sure the venue has enough seating for the required witnesses and family.
  • If the Nikkah is at a marriage hall or separate venue, coordinate arrival times so the Qazi is not waiting and the ceremony does not run late into the reception.

9. Rings (If You Are Exchanging Them)

Ring exchange is not a religious requirement for the Nikkah, but many Pakistani couples do exchange rings after the signing. If you plan to do this, make sure the rings are ready and with you on the day. Assigning one trusted person to be responsible for the rings removes any last-minute scramble.

10. Photographer or Videographer

A good rule of thumb: brief your photographer or videographer on the exact ceremony format beforehand. The signing moment is usually fast and quiet, and it is easy to miss if the photographer is not positioned correctly. Let them know when the Ijab-o-Qubool and the signing will happen so they are ready.

How Far in Advance Should You Prepare?

Here is a simple timeline to keep things manageable:

2 to 3 weeks before:

  • Obtain the Nikkah Nama from your Union Council
  • Confirm your Qazi and get the venue locked in
  • Order your Nikkah pen (especially if you want customization)

1 week before:

  • Confirm your witnesses and make sure they have their CNICs
  • Finalize the mehr amount with both families
  • Do a final check on all documents

The day before:

  • Collect all documents and put them in one place (Nikkah Nama, CNIC copies, witness details)
  • Charge your phone and make sure the photographer knows the schedule
  • Check that your Nikkah pen has arrived and is writing correctly

Day of the ceremony:

  • Hand the Nikkah Nama and pen to whoever will be managing the signing setup
  • Enjoy the moment

Common Things Couples Forget

Based on questions we regularly get through WhatsApp, here are the things that tend to slip through the cracks:

Forgetting to check if the pen actually writes. It sounds basic, but in the rush of the day, even beautiful Nikkah pens get put in a box and never tested. All pens from Qalam Nigar are writing-tested before dispatch, but it is still worth doing a quick test yourself when it arrives. If you are not sure what to look for in a Nikkah pen, our how to choose a Nikkah pen guide covers exactly that.

Not making photocopies of the Nikkah Nama. After the signing, the Qazi keeps the original for registration. Always ask for a certified copy for your own records.

Leaving witness confirmation too late. People’s schedules change. Confirm your witnesses a week in advance and send a reminder the day before.

Ordering the Nikkah pen too late. Custom pens take time to make. Check delivery timelines when you order. Our Nikkah pen price guide also covers what to expect at different price points so you are not surprised.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many witnesses are required for a Nikkah in Pakistan?

At minimum, two adult male Muslim witnesses are required, or one male and two female witnesses. They must be present at the time of the Ijab-o-Qubool and must sign the Nikkah Nama.

Is a Nikkah pen mandatory for the ceremony?

No, there is no religious requirement for a specific type of pen. But many couples choose a dedicated Nikkah pen because the signing moment is significant and they want to keep something from the day as a keepsake. Any pen that writes clearly on paper is technically sufficient.

Can women sign the Nikkah Nama?

Yes. The bride signs the Nikkah Nama to give her consent. Her signature is a core part of the contract, not optional.

What happens if the Nikkah Nama is not registered?

An unregistered Nikkah is still Islamically valid if all the religious conditions are met, but it has no legal standing in Pakistan. Registration through the Union Council is necessary for the marriage to be recognized under civil law, which matters for passports, property, and other legal matters.

Where can I get a Nikkah pen in Pakistan?

Qalam Nigar ships Nikkah pens nationwide across Pakistan. You can browse all available styles, including handmade, dip, metal, and jute options online, with customization and nationwide delivery available on all orders.
